Seit dem Tod seiner Schwester schwänzt August (Khalil Everage) die Schule. Der 17-Jährige ist schüchtern, leidet unter Platzangst und verarbeitet sein Trauma mittels Musik. Eines Tages, als August mal wieder zurückgezogen an seinen Beats arbeitet, steht ein Sicherheitsbeamter (Anthony Anderson) vor seiner Tür. Der Wachmann arbeitet an Augusts High School und hat den Auftrag, ihn zurückzuholen, doch als er die Musik des jungen Talents hört, entwickelt er ganz andere Pläne. Der Schulangestellte wäre viel lieber ein erfolgreicher Musikmanager, aber seine vorherigen Versuche scheiterten kläglich. Er glaubt an eine zweite Chance und sieht in August die Möglichkeit, seinen Traum zu verwirklichen. Es bedarf etwas Überzeugungsarbeit, bis August einwilligt. Gemeinsam planen der traumatisierte Hip-Hopper und der hoffnungsvolle Manager den großen Durchbruch und bekämpfen dabei zusammen die Dämonen ihrer Vergangenheit.
