Der ehemalige Bankräuber Lucas wurde soeben aus der Haft entlassen und sucht nun eine Bank auf, um seinen Scheck einzulösen. Dort trifft er auf Perry der seinen ersten Banküberfall begeht, um mit dem Geld seiner kleinen Tochter zu helfen, die nach dem Tod der Mutter kein Wort mehr gesprochen hat. Als ein Bankangestellter den Alarm auslöst und die Polizei entdeckt, dass Lucas auch in der Bank ist, ist für diese klar, dass er der Bankräuber sein muss. Um nicht noch einmal ins Gefängnis zu kommen, flüchtet Lucas mit Perry, in der Absicht, sich danach von ihm zu trennen und aus den USA zu fliehen. Um Perry noch einmal zu helfen, befreit Lucas mit ihm seine kleine Tochter aus dem Kinderheim. Als diese aus Zuneigung zu Lucas auf einmal wieder anfängt zu sprechen, lässt sich Lucas erweichen und das Trio macht sich auf den Weg zur Grenze nach Kanada
