Kurz vor dem Ende der DDR fällt die engagierte Sozialistin Christiane Kerner ins Koma, weil sie beobachtet wie ihr Sohn Alexander während einer Anti-DDR-Demonstration festgenommen wird. Als sie nach dem Fall der Mauer wieder erwacht, muss sie geschont werden. Um sie nicht aufzuregen, versucht die Familie, zu der auch Tochter Ariane gehört, den nicht mehr existierenden Staat in der Wohnung zu simulieren. Das Unterfangen erweist sich jedoch als schwierige Mission, da die typischen DDR-Produkte nach der Wende keine Hochkonjunktur haben, müssen Alexander und Arine alle Hebel in Bewegung setzen, um sie noch aufzutreiben. Alexander dreht eigene Berichte des DDR-Fernsehens, um seiner Mutter vorzugaukeln, das es noch existiert. Die Realität außerhalb der Wohnung und die idealisierte Version der DDR, die Alexander erschafft, offenbaren die schwierige Zeit, in der sich nicht nur Christiane befindet.
