München, 1925: Olga Benario, Tochter aus großbürgerlicher Münchener Familie, verlässt mit nur 17 Jahren ihr Elternhaus, um ganz und gar ihren kommunistischen Idealen folgen zu können. In einer tollkühnen Aktion befreit sie ihren kommunistischen Genossen Otto Braun aus einem Berliner Gefängnis. Gemeinsam fliehen sie nach Moskau, wo Olga eine militärische Ausbildung erhält und eine Laufbahn in der Kommintern beginnt. Hier bekommt sie eine heikle Aufgabe gestellt: Als Ehefrau getarnt soll sie den brasilianischen General Luís Carlos Prestes sicher in dessen Heimat geleiten. Dieser hatte von Moskau aus den Sturz des Diktators Vargas vorbereitet. Auf der Überfahrt wird jedoch aus der nüchternen Tarnung leidenschaftliche Realität. Eine Liebe, die weit über jeden Klassenkampf hinausgeht. Die Revolte 1935 jedoch scheitert. Durch Verrat landen die beiden in den Folterkellern des Despoten. Dort stellt Olga fest, dass sie von Prestes ein Kind erwartet.
