Der brutale Bürgerkrieg, der 1983 im Sudan wütet, macht unzählige Menschen zu Flüchtlingen, unter ihnen auch Mamere, Theo, Abital und Jeremiah. Sie haben ihre Familie verloren und sind seit Kindesbeinen an auf sich alleingestellt. Nach 13 Jahren in einem Flüchtlingslager werden drei von ihnen ausgewählt, um an einem Hilfsprogramm teilzunehmen, bei dem 3600 Flüchtlinge in die USA gebracht werden. Als sie in Kansas eintreffen, werden sie von Carrie Davis empfangen, die ihnen eigentlich nur ihre neuen Jobs beschaffen soll. Doch sie nimmt sich ihrer an, hilft ihnen, sich in der komplett fremden Welt zu orientieren und setzt sich schließlich auch dafür ein, dass der noch fehlende Abital ebenfalls immigrieren kann. Doch all diese Aufgaben gestalten sich schwieriger, als zuerst gedacht…
